MANALI :
trekking
With an altitude of 1830 m (6000 feet), Manali becomes an idealic, hill station. Legend says that, after the great rain deluged the entire world and water covered all the land, there arose a place of breathtaking, natural beauty which appropriately describe Manali. Manali became the place where life began again.
One day, Vaivastava, the seventh incarnation of Manu found a tiny fish in his bath water. The fish told him to look after it with devotion for one day it would do him a great service. Manu cared for the fish until the day it grew so huge that he released it into the sea. Before departing, the fish warned Manu of an impending deluge where water will submerge the entire world. When the flood came, Matsya, the fish which is regarded as the first Avtaar of Lord Vishnu, towed Vaivastava and the seven sages to safety. As the water subsided, the seventh Manu's ark came to rest on a hillside and the place was named Manali after him.
Manali does not have a colonial touch like Shimla. Being a pleasant town with lovely nearby countrysides of forests and orchards for hiking, Manali has become a popular place for honeymooning Indian couples.
